Herbal Remedies from the garden

Filed under: Herbal Remedies — Shirley @ 1:17 pm

Herbal Remedies have been used as Home Remedies since the ancient witches and old wise women had a reputation of using them.  They were the ones that knew how to administer the herbs to cure ailments including bleeding noses, baldness, infertility, loss of appetite and many more. They were even used on animal for farms to keep their animals well in the days when there were no modern medicines.

Greeks and Romans used to use herbs to purify the air and celery was used to stuff pillows by the Abyssinians and of the course the North American Indian elders handed down their traditional methods of using herbs to cure and heal their tribe’s people. Most herbs were found growing on their land and they were used in healing and cooking in the early days, picked fresh when required.

Herbs can be classified as having uses for medicinal, aromatic, ornamental and of course the one that is most popular is for culinary uses.

When herbs are grown in a garden they are known in categories such as annuals which include coriander, chervil, oregano, basil and dill.  Biennials are known to live for two seasons and perennials bloom over the winter months and each season. There are also perennials which are sweet marjoram, mint, parsley, sage, and chive. These are now all household names for cooking to enhance the flavours of modern dishes.

Allergies and the use of the Herbs that bring relief

Filed under: Herbal Health — Shirley @ 1:23 pm

Herbalist and holistic practitioners use their professional training and knowledge of herbs for the relief of allergies to help us in our everyday life. We need to take notice of the advice that is at our finger tips to use as a preventative measure, alongside the prescription medicines that the doctors prescribe, in the hope that we can find the relief we need.

However, we also need to be aware of choosing the correct herb that will reduce the symptoms, whether it is hay fever we suffer from or sinuses, coughing, or just colds and influenza that affects us every winter.  If you are exhausted every day, wake up with a runny nose and it spoils your working day at the office or your social life then there is an answer, although your body may take its time to realise that you are helping it, the Home Remedies can fit in easily as  part of the your daily routine.

Herbalists and holistic therapists have compiled a list of Herbal Remedies as a guideline for the person that is uneasy at making decisions of the herbs for their own allergies. The herb Chamomile for skin rashes, Ginkgo for asthma, Garlic and Onions for a tight wheezing chest and a daily spoonful of Horseradish for the sinuses are the most popular herbs for use at home.

A look at other countries views on Aromatherapy oils

Filed under: Aromatherapy Oils — Robert @ 11:20 am

In other countries the Aromatherapy Oils that we use in the home or in a clinic and choose quite freely are sometimes frowned upon because there is no formal principle in the use of the oils.

In the UK, a person can decide to obtain an essential oil of their choice to blend as one of their Home Remedies to use as a massage treatment for members of their family or even close friends. Another alternative is to use the essential oil in a diffuser that will send out the scent or aroma in a room to bring a smell of freshness or calm depending on the aromatherapy oil chosen.

There are candles and scented oils that can be purchased over a counter but they usually have the strength of the aromatherapy oil reduced and although the popularity of essentials oils are new to many countries the treatments, using herbal plants to help with healing the mind and body has been passed down by generations of families for years not in just a few countries but countries all over the world.

It is not advisable to use any aromatherapy oils orally and inform your doctor if you are taking any prescribed medication

A compilation of Herbal Remedies for ear ache

Filed under: Herbal Remedies — Jane @ 2:16 pm

No matter what age you are, the pain is always severe when an infection attacks the canal of the inner ear. We have listed a few of the choices of Herbal Remedies that are available to use in the home.

Ear drops can be made from Bishops Weed to reduce any pain by mixing the milk and the plants seeds together and then filter, applying in the ear twice a day until the swelling reduces.

Dhatura leaves are an herb that you can boil, filter and use in the form of drops placed in the ear.

Cloves that are sautéed on sesame oil and then used in the affected ear will also reduce the pain and the swelling.

Marigold leaves, if left to boil, can reduce the pain of earache and when they are warmed they can be placed in the form of drops into the inner ear regularly.

It is important to note that if using the Home Remedies on children then lessen the strength of the mixture. However the herbal remedies can be used for adults and children at less cost than medicines purchased over the counter, if the pain continues then make an appointment to see your local doctor.

Edible face mask

Filed under: Home Remedies — Jane @ 11:35 am

Many people like to visit a spa, but sometimes you don’t have the time or your house is just too nice to leave.  If you would really like a facial but perhaps are lacking in funds, why not head to the kitchen and create your own?  Here are three simple ideas:

1. Steaming
After boiling a pot of water, lower the heat a little and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Hold your face over a bowl of water, but not too close, and put a towel over the top of your head to help the steaming process. Stay in this position for around 5 minutes and just enjoy the wonderful aromatherapy as the steam opens your pores.

2. Exfoliate
You can use uncooked oatmeal combined with a little warm water to make an excellent exfoliant. Mix the two together to create a paste and then gently scrub on your face to remove the dirt, oil, and dead skin cells.

3 . Fruit Facial Mask
A fruity facial mask can be made cheaply using a variety of fruits. Here is just one simple recipe using the papaya fruit.

-1/2 cup yoghurt
-1 chopped papaya
-1 juiced lemon
-1 teaspoon of honey

Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend on a low speed until a paste is created. Apply to your face and leave it on for at least 30 minutes.

Sweaty Palms and Herbal Remedies

Filed under: Herbal Remedies — Shirley @ 10:35 am

Palmer Hyperhydrosis is more commonly known as sweaty palms to you and me. Everyone has had sweaty palms at some time whether you have been waiting for results of exams or after a workout but how many of us know it can be a problem to a large amount of the population to the point where they have to avoid shaking hands or greeting people. This is due to the physical body trying to lose some of its excess fluid and can cause great embarrassment to the person shaking hands and to the recipient who has to feel the wet hand.

Most people do not realise there is medical cause for the sweating of their hands or other parts of their body they tend to put up with it and try to alleviate the sweating by using deodorants or powders but this can be to the extreme as the hands dry up and cracks appear in the skin.

There are Herbal Remedies that can be used as Home Remedies such as St. Johns Wort, Valerian Root and Kava Kava. It may take a little time to find the one that is suitable for you so don’t worry if you have to try a few.
There is also the chemist and they can provide over the counter drugs although do read the ingredients as they can have side effects. If you decide that both herbal and over the counter products are not suitable it is advisable that you visit your doctor for a prescription medication.

The Benefits of Aromatherapy Oils

Filed under: Aromatherapy Oils — Robert @ 2:18 pm

The Frenchman Rene Gattefoss burnt himself whilst experimenting with the oil of the plant known as lavender and he poured some of the oil over the burnt area of his skin to ease the pain; this is when the word Aromatherapy was born.

Rene continued to look at other herbal plants and experimented to see what properties could be used in the treatment of healing people who had little money for expensive medicines. He tried to extract oils from other various plants and found that a large amount of plants had antiseptic properties that could relieve pain if blended with carrier oil or base oil such as almond.

Since the time the Lavender oil was the first oil to be recognised as an antiseptic there are other oils such as camphor, eucalyptus and menthol which can be added to hot water to breath in the fumes that help a chest infection. Another way is to smooth some of an essential cream direct to the chest as it is now recognised as one of the ways the Herbal Remedies are easily used in the home.

Moods can be changed by using Aromatherapy Oils either by placing the blended oils in diffuser or by placing scented candles around a room. Meditation can be enhanced by calming the mind and different scents are available in bath oils or products that plug in to a wall which will release the scents at certain times in the day or evening as required.
